Failed to open OpenAL device

I've built OpenSpades on Kubuntu and I keep getting "Failed to open OpenAL device" when trying to launch the game with audio enabled. It runs fine with it disabled, reducing polyphonics and disabling EAX does nothing. I have two sound devices on my system (onboard motherboard audio and an external sound card), the motherboard audio is for my desktop speakers and the sound card is for my headphones. The game also runs fine with audio under the Windows version through Wine, but I'd prefer to have the native Linux build for performance reasons.
