well, who needs to know about the new grammar, and old texts making the portuguese better than Odysseus Os Lusíadas, by Luís de Camões (we study it in 9th and 12th grades)
learn from the neighbours shouting at eachother, best way to learn anything. especially swear words

I actually read that book last year, although a shorter version, in prose instead of verse, for a test. Pretty interesting story, although it seems very over the top for us now in the historical context it seemed like pretty standard literary stuff.
