OpenSpades vs AoS Steam Comparison

Build and Shoot Goals
Image
We thought it would be a good time to share our goals and plans for the site and where we stand on those. When we started the site we had no traffic goals or expectations, only within the past few months have we set a traffic goal. Currently, we see about 10,000 users a day and on our best day ever which was last August we saw over 20,000 users. Our traffic goal is to average 100,000 users a day. That is quite a bit larger than anything we have ever seen, but on the scale of the internet 100,000 users is a drop in the bucket. How are we going to get our traffic that high and maintain it? By actively marketing, which we have begun, and finishing up key projects.

We have 3 main projects for the community. Clan Software, Tip Jar and authing.

We have talked about the clan management software before in prior newsletters and on the site. It will revolutionize the clan scene Blue_Wink1 Green_Wink1 giving clans their own subsections on the site. We will be able to dynamically create these subsections with a push of a button. Topo is currently working on the software. The ETA for this is hopefully before October.

Project Tip Jar will allow people to support the site and anyone who has contributed to its success. The basic idea of project tip jar is it will be a way for people to tip others for their work. People will be able to purchase credits from us and they can give those credits to who anyone they want. Saying that it will most likely be limited to verified paypal accounts at first. Also after you purchase credits it would remove ads on the site and unlock an exclusive badge.

At our current size, I imagine several "BnS Content Creators" earning enough to buy lunch. If we hit our traffic goals, we might see people earning enough to live off of it. They would become full time content creators.

We havent fully mapped out how we plan to implement Project Tip Jar. We are actively planning it. There are alot parts to be developed to make it a reality.

For us to maintain a high level of traffic we need a better way to deal with cheaters, the current way servers catch and ban cheaters doesnt scale well. Our plans to provide authing and anticheat via the BnS launcher havent changed. I know we have been talking about authing for a long time now. But it will deal a major blow to cheaters and it will open the doors up to other more positive things like leaderboards and match making. The ETA on authing is still unknown but if you are a software developer and you want to help with authing or anything else let us know.

There is some reworking of the master server that needs to be finished before we can support OpenSpades only servers. We might also expand master server to accept bots so servers can pass the number of bots that are connected. Again the ETA is unknown.

BnS league season 5

Image

Omega Squad, Os Porra Loka, and Execution are in a 3-way tie for first place. On mumble there was a discussion of having a 5 cap limit added to league matches. What do you guys think? Also, stage 3 ended on July, 20th and stage 4 will end at August 3rd, on the 4th we will start the playoffs. For more information click here.

FSOM

The Aloha Mystery FSOM on July 5th, planned by ei8htx, was a game mode based off the common FPS mode "Infected". Aided in part by Danko and BR, ei8htx took on this challenge to create a worthy FSOM. In this gamemode Zombies can press V now to sense where humans are, they also have more health than the humans. Should force the humans to stand and fight than run off and hide, plus the humans could be rewarded with constant ammo reloads if within the vicinity of the tent (current maps can be easily adapted by adding control points to existing structures, like the house or barn in battlefarm). So far, ei8htx says this intriguing new game mode will stay. http://buildandshoot.com/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=11191

Maps
Roanapur
by Jdrew

Roanapur is an island based map inspired by the city of the same name in Black Lagoon. It has a design similar to Tortuga with the look and feel of Tunnel-Top. What makes this map different from other maps by Jdrew is that the models were all made by himself though you can see they take inspiration from the game Stone-Hearth. There are a few problems with the map such as the trees aren't as organized as they would be in real life but it is still a nice looking map.

Grassy topo land
by Lostmotel

Grassy topo land(GTL) was released with another map called Carnage hills. I was wondering which map to highlight. To me Carnage hills is a lot like an earlier map by Lostmotel called 'icecream' only Carnage hills has a sandy texture. GTL seems to have all of the design elements from Lostmotel's most famous maps all in one. You have the tunnels from octopus, the lanes from spitfire, and the small mountains from icecraft. All of these elements really complement each other. The downside is that there might be too much cover so players won't be doing much building, that and the tunnel make the map really fast paced from the start though too so it just depends on your perspective. In the end I think this is going to be a map that people will remember.

I like that idea of earning money by creating mods, and nice to hear about that some progress is being made for OpenSpades-only servers.

Excited for the clan software. Get up on your arse and work on it, topo!
Anyway, the news is great! And about that BnS content creator thing, it'd be awesome. To make stuff for the community and earn from it is great for peeps around my age. Question is, how are we going to get the funds for that? Of course other users would start making content and also earn from it, and the number of users needed to be paid would increase. Any idea on that?

Very cool, I'll play the tournament 2x2, it will be very difficult.
And probably eXe win this league, because they made a very strong team.
It's great to see the progress of OpenSpades, will grow a lot.

Pushing openspades and VoxelAuth, that might become very dangerous together and is capable of spoiling AoS even more. Since Openspades is open-source, every kid with small knowledge of C++ obviously can write a hack. Currently, we do have scripts that protect servers from hacks, and they do block many hacks, it's just that nobody uses them. If openspades gets pushed, there might be a new wave of hacks that aren't recognized by the current anti-hack scripts and that can be hard to detect (for example, accuracy hack, aimbot without snapping, norecoil that doesn't trigger the aimbot2.py detection). So how are you going to handle such hacks? VoxelAuth doesn't do much of a difference. It's just an account system which allows admins to ban a specific account. But what will prevent banned hackers from creating a new account and continuing?

The clan software seems like a great idea, as well as the tip jar. Maybe you add a way to set a server icon or let server admins set up an image that would be shown on the server list instead of the server name, map and mode, with a background and custom font for the player count?

VoxelAuth is a cool project but it is rakiru's and unrealincedent's project is separate from BnS authing at least for the time being. And we know how easy it would be to add hacks to OpenSpades that is why we only allow certain builds i.e., yvt's and topo's builds to connect to auth'd servers. We are also going to add flags to have Voxlap only servers when OpenSpades only servers is released.
